Stair climbing in the Montafon: sporty, challenging - different!

The Europatreppe is closed in Sommer 2016.

The Europatreppe in Partenen is not only the longest straight flight of stairs in Europe, but with its 3,609 steps, 700 m vertical difference and a maximum incline of up to 86%, it’s a sporting challenge for everyone.

The “biggest fitness machine in the world”

Europatreppe 4000

Numerous professional sports people from Austria and abroad have the Europatreppe firmly integrated into their training plan - such as the Austrian women’s national ski team as well as numerous football teams and marathon runners. With a bit of ambition, even hobby athletes can manage the “biggest fitness machine in the world” without too much difficulty. And if the stair climbers happen to run out of puff, several benches along the way invite them to pause for a while and enjoy the wonderful view of the surrounding mountain panorama. Stopwatches at the start and finish let you record your performance with precision. You can obtain a certificate of your per-sonal best time from the tourism offices in Gaschurn and Partenen as well as the valley station of the Vermuntbahn.

To ensure the Europatreppe is well maintained, it is possible to buy individual steps or rent them from the municipality of Gaschurn-Partenen for special occasions. The revenue raised is used to carry out a wide range of restoration activities.

Vermuntbahn and Europa Stairway Summer 2014 to 2017

The Vermuntbahn cableway service will be closed to the public during the 2014, 2015 and, quite probably, 2016 summer seasons.
This is due to work on building the Obervermuntwerk II power station, which will have an output of 360 MW, in the Vermunt / Silvretta area. The work will start in May 2014 and is expected to last until 2018. Electrical power shall be transferred under avalanche-safe conditions along a 220 kV cable system (which has yet to be installed) from the transformer cavern in Vermunt to the substation at Kopswerk I in Partenen.
During the summer months in 2014, until 2017 and, we expect, in 2018, the Vermuntbahn shall be used solely for construction site and related transportation purposes, so it will not be available for passenger use. Equally, the Europa Stairway 4000 shall be closed during the months when the building work takes place.

The normal Vermuntbahn service shall remain fully available in the coming winter seasons.
